Capperi CAPERS (capparis spinosa L)are shrubby, tender perennials with edible flower buds. Capers are Mediterranean so will only thrive in New Zealand if you have constant heat and with climate change this may well suit capers in the future years. So think about the climatic considerations in your province. heat is your caper friend.Germination rates are quite low so use plenty of extra seed.Place the seeds in the foil pkt in a dry container in the fridge for 6 weeks. Remove pkt rub one side of the seed with an emery board. Then soak in warm water overnight. Plant in moist cacti or succulent mix. Insulate seed tray with damp newpaper and keep warm until germination begins. This can take a month or 3- so be patient.Water the transplants in and keep water to the minimum. No need to fertilise. Ideally tuck the plants into bricks or concrete crevices facing west to keep warm as they do in the Mediterranean. Caper plants grow very slowly. Warning here... be very very patient! When harvesting for pickling pick flower buds just before opening
